For more than five decades, saxophonist and composer Ornette Coleman has played a seminal role in American music. The inventor of what has been called “free jazz,” Coleman belongs to that rare breed of artists and thinkers whose influence extends far beyond the realm of their chosen medium. His most recent recording, Sound Grammar, won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for music, the first time a recording has won the prize and a first for purely improvised music.
